LINK AADHAAR TO MOBILE PHONE BY FEBRUARY 2018, IT WILL NOT COMPROMISE YOUR DATA: CENTRE

The government has issued a notice clarifying citizens' doubts that linking Aadhaar to mobile phone will not compromise your biometrics data and neither will it give the telecom company access to your banking data.

The Centre has stated that any biometrics collected by the telecom company has to be encrypted by the telecom company and sent to UIDAI at that moment itself and cannot store it. Storage will be considered a criminal offence and punishable with up to three years of imprisonment.

The mobile linkage is being done as per the orders the Supreme Court issued in February in the Lokniti Foundation case, the Centre said. All SIM cards have to be verified with Aadhaar within a year from the date of judgement, which is February 2018.

Those phones that are not linked by February 2018 will be deactivated after that. This is being done to prevent criminals, fraudsters, and terrorists from using SIMs in the name of ordinary citizens.
