‘Masaan’ was showcased at the 68th Cannes Film Festival on May 19 in Un Certain
Regard section and received a long standing ovation at the end. Directed
by first time director Neeraj Ghaywan, is set in Varanasi. He
apparently broke down at the unstoppable five-minute long applause.
Masaan – a joint production between Manish Mundra, Macassar
Productions, Arte France Cinema, Sikhya Entertainment& Phantom Films, stars
new comers like Vicky Kaushal, ShwetaTripathi with performers like Richa
Chadha& Sanjay Mishra.
An ecstatic Neeraj says, “In year 2012, I went to the Cannes film festival as an assistant director to Anurag Kashyap on Gangs of Wasseypur. Three years later, I am here, at the festival with my own film. I cannot explain in words how overwhelmed I am with the response of the critics and reviewers.
Masaan, which means 'crematorium' in Hindi, is one of two Indian
films being screened in the Un Certain Regard section. The other is Punjabi
film Chauthi Koot.
