Deflationary pressure continued for the sixth straight month, as
wholesale inflation dropped to a new low of minus 2.65 per cent in April
this year. This was largely due to a fall in the prices of fuel and
manufactured items. Inflation, as measured by the Wholesale Price Index,
was 5.55 per cent in April last year.
The manufactured products segment saw deflation for the second consecutive month, as prices fell 0.52 per cent in April, while in the fuel and power segment prices fell more than 13 percent. Wholesale inflation in the food articles category eased to 5.73 percent, from 6.31 per cent in March. Potato prices saw the steepest fall of over 41 per cent in April. Vegetables prices declined 1.32 per cent. But inflation in pulses was 15.38 per cent. Date earlier this week had showed that retail inflation fell to a 4-month low of 4.87 per cent in April.
