Now an app that lets you keep tab on mobile usage

Keeping tab of your mobile phone usage is one of the biggest pain points of our time. While service providers offer their own apps to keep tab on usage and recharge accounts when needed, multi-service apps of this kind are rare. This is where the updated Planhound 2 app wants to make difference.

“We built a recommendation engine to help people discover the right plan based on their usage, but soon figured that a majority of the mobile users did not know their usage because they were mobile prepaid users who did not get a mobile bill. That is when the app idea was born — something that sits on your phone and can measure all this automatically,” explains Jigar Doshi, co-founder of Cheeni Labs, creators of the new app. He says that with usage being accurate, the recommendations are better and the savings a lot more real.

The app automatically recognises your service provider, the kind of network you are on and how much balance you have. On a post-paid connection, it shows usage, but not …

Back Pass: Film - Pyaar Ka Punchnama 2 - Transforming a bike into a bar and a temple into a club

In a career spanning over a decade, films like Murder 2, Grand Masti, Barfi! and, more recently, Aashiqui 2 and CityLights, made production designer Rajat Poddar believe that he had seen (and designed) it all. Then, director Luv Ranjan sat him down for two hours, giving him an exhaustive account of the sets he wanted for the sequel to his 2011 comedy Pyaar Ka Punchnama, and he changed his mind.
First, came the cheesy, 60-feet red heart, to be used in the song Paro. "I had three days to build the heart in Film City, to be used on a set that resembled a wide, empty street in Delhi. The heart needed plywood stairs behind it for the dancers to climb it and had to be attached to a stage for the leads to perform. Luv even wanted the reflection of the heart to fall on the stage, along with fireworks," Rajat, who wasn't a part of the first instalment, reveals. The entire grid support, which was built using plywood and steel, flares up with light and fire.
If that wasn't wa…

Is Apple charging Indians the most for iPhone 6S?

NEW DELHI: Just how much is too much for an Apple iPhone? Is nearly Rs 1 lakh too high a tag for a smartphone in a price-sensitive market like India which laps up affordable Rs 10,000-15,000 Android-powered phones by the tons?

The answer to both the questions is what will define world's top brand's strategy to carve a bigger pie of the burgeoning Indian smartphone market. Apple never took India seriously as the revenues were minuscule.

Until a few years ago, it used to launch iPhone in India months after global launch, thereby giving rise to a flourishing grey market

The situation changed in last two years, and this year, Apple had the quickest turnaround when it launched iPhone 6S and 6S Plus in India on October 16, Friday. A lot of Apple fanboys amusingly quipped Apple was finally taking India seriously after company CEO Tim Cook's recent meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Make no mistake. Apple only takes its business seriously and it is a fact th…

Adobe camera app lets users automatically delete tourists from holiday photos

Adobe has revealed a new camera app that can delete unwanted tourists from photographs, easily and automatically.

The new app works by using an algorithm to look at a scene and analyse what is moving and what isn’t. It will then produce a photo with the moving things cut out – allowing people to take a picture of a momentum or other sight in full, even though there might have been people in front of it the whole time.

Adobe showed off a prototype of the new app at its Max Conference in San Francisco this week. It demonstrated the app on an Android phone, showing how it can simply cut out all of the obstructions in a photo and take a picture of the Taj Mahal or Eiffel Tower without any people in the way.

It works in just a few seconds, according to the on-stage demonstration, using the phone’s processing power to quickly remove all of the obstructions.

The app seems to require that the phone stays absolutely still, which would mean that it needs to be left on a tripod or another stable sur…

+Jazbaa movie review: Aishwarya Rai Bachchan makes a powerful comeback

A stylish gritty thriller that stays true to its genre and delivers courtesy a solid ensemble of performance heavy star cast. Clearly the film belongs to Aishwarya. She manages to make Anuradha believable from the very first frame. Even though there are moments when she has to amp up the drama quotient, screech, scream, show her theatrics, there is a sense of confidence with which she builds up her character. We relate to her pain not only because she’s lost her daughter, but her constant struggle to suspend the very values and beliefs she upholds is what makes Anuradha endearing. Gupta gives her a canvas where she shows a range that perhaps no other director has been able to capture. If you expect a performance driven film, then Jazbaa doesn’t disappoint. Also the pace doesn’t slacken, knowing what the genre promises, Gupta keeps his script tight. Even the songs come only as momentary fillers, never dampening the effect of the taut storyline. Atul Kulkarni, Shabana Azmi, Jackie Shro…

Indian Air Force to Have Women Fighter Pilots Soon, says Air Chief Arup Raha

Women pilots will soon fly fighter jets of the Indian Air Force, Air Chief Marshal Arup Raha said today.
"We have women pilots flying transport aircraft and helicopters, we are now planning to induct them into the fighter stream to meet the aspirations of young women of India," the air chief on the 83rd Air Force Day.
In the past, the Air Force had refused to allow women in fighter squadrons because of fears of torture or rape if they were shot down in combat.
If they do make a historic leap, the Air Force will be the first to have women in active front-line combat.
In 2010, women in the army and the Air Force were allowed full term service by the Delhi High Court, which commented that women officers "deserve better from the government."
Last month, women naval officers also scored this milestone, with the High Court saying it would "frown upon any endeavor to block progress of women."
Till five years ago, women military officers were entitled …

Tim honours Job's on his 4th death anniversary!!!

In life, Steve Jobs was lauded as a brilliant innovator who revolutionized technology and design. In memoriam, however, the man responsible for establishing the iEmpire has often been portrayed as something less than ideal, and recent films and biographies have highlighted of the less flattering traits of the Apple pioneer. Jobs passed away on October 5, 2011, battling a relapsed pancreatic cancer.
Tim Cook, whose public persona has in many ways become the antithesis of Jobs’, has written a heartfelt email to his employees, celebrating the life of the man who, for better or for worse, is responsible for much of what our technological landscape looks like today. He paid tribute on the fourth anniversary of Job’s death, thanking staff for "remembering both who he was and what he stood for"
