High-level committee outlines six-month action plan for rejuvenation of Yamuna River, to be monitored on a weekly basis
A high-level committee established by the National Green Tribunal (NGT) to revive the Yamuna River has developed a six-month action plan until June 2023. The plan includes monthly targets that will be monitored on a weekly basis. The committee's first report will be submitted to the NGT on January 31. The first meeting of the panel was chaired by Delhi Lt. Governor V.K. Saxena and attended by senior officials from the central and Delhi governments. The meeting discussed the current state of water quality in the Yamuna River and its tributaries, as well as the status of sewage treatment plants and common effluent treatment plants in the city. The committee outlined a plan of action that includes increasing sewage treatment capacity in Delhi, upgrading sewage networks in unauthorized colonies, upgrading 13 common effluent treatment plants, managing industrial effluent, and ensuring a minimum environmental flow in the Yamuna through inter-state coordination. The Lt. Governor emphasized the need for time-bound action and urged officials to implement the plan in a mission mode, warning that any shortcomings will not be tolerated.
