Chennai: Renowned singer and Padma Bhushan winner Jayaram (77) passed away. She was found dead at her residence in Chennai. Hundreds of songs have been recorded in Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi, Hindi languages. She has won the National Film Award for Best Singer thrice. Received the Padma Bhushan Award on the last Republic Day.
Born in 1945 in Vellore, Tamil Nadu. The real name was Kalaivani. The song 'Saurayuthathal vidarngoru...' in the film 'Swapnam', composed by Salil Chowdhary, was the first song in Malayalam.
Vani Jairam learned music from his musician mother. At the age of eight, Akashvani started singing at Madras station. In 1971, she became famous with the song 'Bole re pappi' in the film 'Guddi' in the music of Vasant Desai. The song Guddi won five awards. Chitragupt, Naushad etc. sang Pragalbhar's songs, duet with Jayaram Asha Bhosle in the film 'Pakkeesa'. Madhav Mohan, O.P. Nayyar, RD Burman, Kalyanji Anandji, Laxmikant Pyarelal, Jai Dev etc. also gave voice to the music. In 1968, he married sitar player and music lover Jayaram. She sang with Mohammed Rafi, Mukesh, Mannade and moved to Chennai in 1974 and became active in South Indian language films.
She has recorded over 150 songs in 19 languages. In 1975, he won the National Award for the song 'Ezhusvaramalukkul' in the Tamil film Apoorva Raga, in 1980 for the songs of Sankarabharan, and in 1991 for the songs of Swati Kiran. Vani Jayaram's 30 poems have been published in the name of 'Or Kuilin Kural Kavithai Vativil'.
