Residents in the vicinity of Bengaluru's Sankey Tank are vehemently opposing the plan by the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) to expand the Sankey Tank Bund Road and build a flyover on the same location. According to the residents, the 500-meter-long project will lead to the destruction of a building and a playground cum assembly area in the Stella Maris school. They also claim that the BBMP has marked the prayer assembly area inside the building with red lines. In addition, 66 mature trees along the Sankey Tank Road will be cut down to make way for the proposed flyover, with some of the trees being over 100 years old, including old Gulmohar and Banyan trees. The residents also claim that they will not be able to walk in their neighborhood as the existing footpaths will be transformed into service roads.
The residents argue that if the flyover is built, vehicles from the flyover and the service road below will intersect at the Cauvery Subway, also known as the Magic box, leading to another traffic problem. Both the residents and experts view the entire proposal as a waste of time and resources and believe that the flyover will not resolve the traffic issue and will result in another bottleneck.
