Sanjay Kundu, an IPS officer from the 1989 batch, is a name to be reckoned with in the Indian policing community. He is known for his blend of policing and administrative experiences, having served in critical departments like taxation, excise, vigilance, and even as a joint secretary in the water resources department at the center.
Kundu's most notable contribution to policing has been his introduction of "Broken Window 2.0," a customized version of the famous "Broken Window Theory" of the New York Police Department. He has used this model not only for crime prevention but for the overall criminal justice system, resulting in a 30% drop in crime rates and the stoppage of all heinous crimes.
One of the highlights of Kundu's tenure was the installation of 50,000 CCTV cameras across the state, which has been instrumental in reducing crime. He also introduced the concept of Evidence-Based & Predictive Policing, which has proven to be effective in checking crime.
Under Kundu's leadership, the state of Himachal Pradesh has ranked first in the Crime and Criminal Tracking Network and Systems (CCTNS) for three consecutive years. This has earned the state recognition in the form of the Presidential Police Color, making Himachal Pradesh the 8th state in India to receive this prestigious recognition.
Kundu's efforts to improve the criminal justice system and his commitment to protecting human rights have earned him and the state of Himachal Pradesh the highest recognition in the Indian policing community.
