His journey took a dramatic turn when he joined the Indian Army and was severely injured during the Indo-Pakistani war of 1965, leaving him paraplegic


Despite his injuries, Petkar's determination never wavered. Encouraged by his former coach, he trained rigorously and went on to compete in the 1972 Summer Paralympics. There, he won the gold medal in the 50m freestyle swimming event, setting a new world record
