Shocking Revelation in Kerala: 18-Year-Old Dalit Athlete Alleges Gang Rape by 62 Men Over Five Years

In a deeply disturbing revelation from Kerala's Pathanamthitta district, an 18-year-old Dalit athlete has come forward with allegations of being sexually abused and gang-raped by 62 men over the course of five years, starting from when she was just 13. The case has sent shockwaves through the community and has gripped the nation's attention.

DIG S. Ajeetha Begum, who is overseeing the investigation, said that 30 FIRs have been registered in connection with the alleged sexual assault of the girl and out of the 59 accused mentioned in the cases, 44 have been arrested.

Details of the Allegations:

The survivor, identified as a district-level athlete, has accused her peers, including neighbors, sports coaches, and even friends of her father, of perpetrating the abuse. The traumatic ordeal reportedly began with molestation by a neighbor who took sexually explicit photographs of her at age 13. This initial abuse escalated over the years, with her alleging three separate instances of gang rape in the last five years.

The abuse allegedly continued through her involvement in sports camps, where her interactions with coaches and classmates were exploited. Her father's mobile phone was used to communicate with some of the accused, which has now become a critical piece of evidence in the ongoing investigation.

Legal Actions Taken:

The Kerala Police have responded rapidly, arresting 44 individuals so far, with some of the accused being minors. The investigation has led to the registration of 29 FIRs (First Information Reports) at various police stations in the district. Authorities have also seized mobile phones from the accused to gather further evidence.

A Special Investigation Team (SIT) has been formed to delve deeper into the case, with DIG S Ajeetha Begum overseeing the probe. The complexity of the case is underscored by the fact that two of the accused are believed to be abroad, for whom lookout notices and possibly Red Corner notices through Interpol are being contemplated.

Community and National Response:

The allegations have sparked widespread outrage and discussions on the safety of women and girls, especially those from marginalized communities like Dalits, who are often at the bottom of India's caste hierarchy and face significant discrimination despite legal protections.

The National Commission for Women has taken note of the case, calling for stringent action against the accused. There's also been a broader conversation about the systemic issues of caste-based violence and the protection of minors in educational and sports environments.

Current Status:

The survivor has been moved to a shelter for her protection, and she is expected to provide a detailed statement to a woman police officer. Meanwhile, the investigation continues, with police confirming that they are hunting for the remaining 14 accused. The case's gravity is reflected in the community's demand for justice and the legal system's response to ensure a thorough investigation.

This case is not only a grim reminder of the challenges in addressing sexual violence but also highlights the need for systemic changes to protect vulnerable groups in society. The legal proceedings, public discourse, and the eventual outcome will be closely watched as they unfold.
