Over thousand trees have been cut at Mumbai's Aarey Colony so far to clear space for a car shed of a metro project, despite a massive protest by green activists against the move. The environmentalists approached the Bombay High Court for the tree cutting to be stopped, but just like Friday, the court refused to intervene. After the night long drama 29 protestors are sent to jail over the issue.
What does Environment Minister Prakash Javadekar says about the issue ?
Union Minister Prakash Javadekar also defended the Bombay High Court order that allowed Mumbai Metro Corporation to fell trees in the Aarey Colony.
Terming the Delhi Metro the best of its kind in the world, he said there was a need to cut 20 to 25 trees to set up the first metro station in Delhi and people had similarly opposed it.
Mumbai Metro Managing Director Ashwini Bhide, who is facing flak over the issue, today said the move was "inevitable".

A project that should be executed with pride, the Metro 3, @MumbaiMetro3 has to do it in the cover of the night, with shame, slyness and heavy cop cover.— Aaditya Thackeray (@AUThackeray) October 4, 2019
The project supposed to get Mumbai clean air, is hacking down a forest with a leopard, rusty spotted cat and more
400 trees have been cut in the dead of the night. As citizens sang and joined hands in unity pleading to STOP this massacre. Can’t you see they are UNITED by love!?! Love for nature. Love for our children and our future. #Aarey #ClimateAction #ActNow #ChangeIsComing pic.twitter.com/7XCwSeaqDT— Dia Mirza (@deespeak) October 5, 2019
Cutting trees at night is a pathetic attempt at trying to get away with something even those doing it know is wrong. #Aarey #GreenIsGold #Mumbai— Farhan Akhtar (@FarOutAkhtar) October 5, 2019
