On Friday, 15 March morning, a gunman opened fire in Christchurch, New Zealand, killing multiple people in a mass shooting that New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern has called "an extraordinary and unprecedented act of violence." He, and reportedly three others, targeted two mosques in the city, killing a total of 49 people and injuring at least 20 others.

Twitter has taken down his profile, but screenshots remain.

Indians are trending #BoycottChineseProducts—using Chinese smartphones

For the past few days, Indians have probably been using Chinese-made phones to seek a boycott of made-in-China products.

After China blocked a March 13 UN Security Council move to blacklist Masood Azhar, the chief of Pakistan-based Jaish-e-Mohammed, as a “global terrorist,” Indians trended #BoycottChineseProducts on Twitter. They asked fellow citizens to stop buying China-made electronic products, clothing, and firecrackers, among other things.

Yet, in fiscal 2018, Indians spent upwards of Rs50,000 crore ($7.2 billion) on just four Chinese smartphone brands—Xiaomi, Oppo, Vivo, and Honor.

Gunman opened fire on worshippers at two mosques in the New Zealand city of Christchurch

A gunman opened fire on Friday prayers at a mosque in New Zealand killing many worshippers and forcing the city of Christchurch into lockdown as police launched a massive manhunt.

New Zealand media reported that between nine and 27 people were killed, but the death toll could not be confirmed. Police said multiple fatalities had occurred at two mosques, but it was unclear how many attackers were involved.

Many Indians think boycotting Chinese goods will put pressure on China. It's a mistaken belief.

After China put a technical hold on the UN Security Council resolution to designate Maulana Masood Azhar of Jaish-e-Muhammad (JeM) as a global terrorist, Indians are once again livid at Beijing. Azhar's JeM was responsible for attack on a CRPF convoy in J&K on February 14 in which nearly 40 personnel were killed. This was fourth time China has derailed such a proposal in last 10 years.

Indian social media is abuzz with calls for boycott of Chinese goods, a typical mass response whenever China hits at Indian interest. However, boycott may not be the right way to respond to China.

Are some untrained ATC staff guiding planes?

Several air traffic controllers handling flights in India are unqualified for the job, Economic Times reports, citing the Aircraft Accidents Investigation Bureau’s findings. Earlier, the AAIB found 19 unauthorised ATCOs in Nagpur, 85 in Delhi, and 20 in Varanasi. The report also puts down the lapses by ATCOs to short-staffing, which restricts them from taking breaks. Previously, Hindustan Times reported that the number of misses in Indian skies has hit a six-year high.
