The biggest shock at the 2022 Oscars came when “King Richard” star Will Smith slapped Chris Rock on live TV after the comedian made a joke about the actor’s wife, Jada Pinkett Smith.
The real power of a man is in the size of the smile of the woman sitting next to him, Jada Smith's smile is an answer to all those artists who think it funny and hilarious to comment on someone' health , body, type , race , accent & color.Demeaning someone is not comedy. It's time we stop accepting and laughing at jokes made on People.
These days comedian's don't know how to be funny without stomping on people. The damaging language used by comedians is degrading the quality of humour. Take Indian standup comedian's for example, you can go listen to them in a pub or on their youtube channel, Can you listen to them with your Family ? This is not a cultural shift; it sometimes takes an extra bit to make people laugh without demeaning others. As a comedian you can joke about anything, it's limitless . The problem is laziness, the lazy comedians don't have content, They use these vulgar lines and controversy to become popular.
Sometimes there are deliberate attempts from comedians to become viral. Take example of AIB knockout , a celebrity roast event which led to the FIR against Tanmay Bhatt and others for objectionable content.
Next was Vir Das who came up with his show "I come from two India '' which talked about the duality of Indians and some social issues. The recent one was Munawwar who made fun of Indian Religion. Kunal Kamra is also a controversial figure in comedy but majorly due to his political satire on Government.
The new generation of comedians are creating their own template without balancing the freedom of speech versus social responsibility. Comedy always existed in our civilization because that was a source of entertainment. In early days Comedy performing, which included magic tricks and and circus skills alongside verbal humour date back to our earliest records of civilisation. However today it is limited to verbal humour which makes comedians difficult to balance the content. Will Smith's assault on Chris may easily inspire the impulse of a drunk steak head in a comedy club to walk up to the stage because he did not like the joke. But will this stop comedians stop from making offensive jokes ?
What Will Smith did today is the biggest strength to any wife. The violent behavior and hitting up the comedian is not justified but comedy is not an excuse to humiliate people either.
