Tanmay Bhat, a popular Indian comedian, was recently removed from a Kotak Mahindra Bank campaign after an old tweet of his regarding a Ganesha idol resurfaced. The bank has since apologized and clarified that they do not endorse or support such comments. The tweet in question, which was posted in 2013, had referred to an idol of the Hindu deity Ganesha as 'ugly'. After the tweet was brought to the attention of the bank, it took swift action and removed Bhat from the campaign. Kotak Mahindra Bank released a statement which said, "We don't support or endorse any such comments made by Tanmay Bhat in the past. We have taken immediate action to drop him from the campaign." The bank also apologized to all those who were offended by Bhat's tweet. The incident has sparked a debate over freedom of speech on social media and if it should be limited. While some are of the opinion that such comments should not be tolerated, others have argued that the comedian should not be held responsible for a tweet which was posted seven years ago. It remains to be seen if the bank will take any further action against the comedian.
