Raghav Sharma is a 2013 batch IAS officer who is currently serving as the District Magistrate of Una. With a law degree from National Law University, Jodhpur, he has become known for his innovative initiatives that benefit women and children.
Libraries for a Brighter Future
One of Raghav Sharma's key initiatives was to build libraries in each sub-division of Una to provide students with a space to study and prepare for competitive exams such as the UPSC. In 2022, a total of six libraries were built, with a capacity of 30 students each.
Transforming Non-Residential Training Schools
Raghav Sharma also transformed Non-Residential Training Schools (NRSTs), which are meant for the children of migrant laborers. These centers were previously outdoor facilities, but under Raghav Sharma's leadership, three NRSTs were beautifully designed and equipped with basic amenities such as toilets, electricity, and water connections. These centers allow children from slum areas to join mainstream education in nearby schools. Raghav Sharma has a goal of building ten more NRSTs.
Promoting Dragon Fruit Cultivation
In addition to his work with libraries and NRSTs, Raghav Sharma is also promoting dragon fruit cultivation in Una. He started with a workshop for progressive farmers in 2021 to educate them about dragon fruit cultivation and its benefits. The district administration added dragon fruit cultivation as an activity under MGNREGA and funded the plantation and trellis system costs for farmers. In 2022, over 5,000 dragon fruit plants were planted under MGNREGA, and many farmers have also taken up dragon fruit cultivation at their own cost. In 2023, Una became the first district chosen for a dragon fruit processing factory under the World Bank-funded Horticulture Development program.
Raghav Sharma's initiatives have improved the lives of many in Una, particularly women and children. His dedication to education, child welfare, and agriculture is an inspiration to all and a testament to the positive impact that dedicated public servants can have.
