Sheikh Rashid Ahmed, Awami Muslim League Chief, Arrested in Contradicting Circumstances

According to the police, Sheikh Rashid Ahmed, the head of Awami Muslim League, was arrested from the Murree Motorway. However, Sheikh Rashid denies the police's statement, claiming that he and his nephew, Sheikh Rashid Shafiq, were taken into custody from their house in Rawalpindi, not the motorway. He expressed fear for his life, stating that his only "crime" was supporting Imran Khan. In a statement made at the Polyclinic hospital in Islamabad, where he was taken for a medical check-up, Sheikh Rashid highlighted his clean record, having never been charged with corruption in his 16 previous ministerial positions.

The arrest comes after a case was filed against Sheikh Rashid by Raja Inayat Ur Rehman, Rawalpindi Division President of Pakistan Peoples Party, in the Aabpara Police Station in Islamabad. The case alleges that the AML chief posed a permanent danger to former President Asif Ali Zardari by spreading false rumors of a plot to assassinate Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf's Imran Khan. The FIR states that Sheikh Rashid attempted to tarnish the reputation of the former president and cause harm to the PPP co-chairman and his family.
