According to an official statement, Aadhaar holders in India have conducted over 9,029.28 crore authentication transactions so far, with 199.62 crore taking place in January 2023. This indicates the growth of the digital economy in the country. While the majority of transactions used biometric fingerprint authentication, demographic and OTP authentications were also used. In January, 135.53 crore biometric fingerprint-based authentications were carried out, demonstrating its widespread usage and utility in people's daily lives.
The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has developed a new security mechanism for Aadhaar-based fingerprint authentication. The mechanism uses a combination of finger minutiae and finger image to check the liveness of the fingerprint captured, and is based on artificial intelligence and machine learning.
As of the end of January 2023, Aadhaar saturation among all age groups had climbed to 94.65%, and the saturation level among adults was almost universal. The Aadhaar Enabled Payment System (AePS) is enabling financial inclusion for those at the bottom of the income pyramid, with 1,629.98 crore of last mile banking transactions made possible through AePS and the network of micro-ATMs as of the end of January 2023.
More than 1,100 government schemes, programs, and initiatives in the country run by both the Centre and states have been notified to use Aadhaar. The digital ID is helping various ministries and departments in the Centre and states to improve efficiency, transparency, and the delivery of welfare services to targeted beneficiaries.
