From gangster to parliamentarian: Story of Atiq Ahmad's journey

 

1962: Atiq Ahmad is born in Shravasti, Uttar Pradesh.

1989: Atiq Ahmad enters politics as an independent candidate and wins the Allahabad (now Prayagraj) West MLA seat.

1991-1996: Atiq Ahmad retains the Allahabad West MLA seat in two consecutive legislative assembly elections.

1996: Atiq Ahmad wins his fourth consecutive term as an MLA, this time as a member of the Samajwadi Party.

1999: Atiq Ahmad departs from the Samajwadi Party and becomes the president of Apna Dal (Kamerawadi).

2002: Atiq Ahmad wins the assembly election as a member of Apna Dal (Kamerawadi).

2003: Atiq Ahmad returns to the Samajwadi Party.

2004-2009: Atiq Ahmad serves as a Member of Parliament (MP) from the Phulpur constituency in Uttar Pradesh.

2005: Atiq Ahmad is alleged to have been involved in the murder of BSP MLA Raju Pal.

2006: Atiq Ahmad is sentenced to life imprisonment for the abduction of Umesh Pal, the key witness in the murder case of Raju Pal.

2016: Atiq Ahmad's associates allegedly assault college staff in Prayagraj.

2017: Atiq Ahmad is detained.

2018: Atiq Ahmad is shifted out of the state.

April 15, 2023: Atiq Ahmad and his brother Ashraf are fatally shot in Prayagraj while being transported for a court-mandated medical check-up during their five-day police remand.
