Manipur Violence: Political Parties Condemn Incident, Call for Peace

The recent violence in Manipur has sparked outrage across the country, with political parties from all sides condemning the incident and calling for peace.

The violence broke out on May 3, 2023, between the Meitei and Kuki communities in the state. The clashes have claimed at least 115 lives and displaced thousands of people.

Supreme court :

On 26th July , the Centre urged the Supreme Court to transfer the trial of the Manipur violence case, including the gang-rape case, to a location outside the state. Additionally, the Centre requested the top court to ensure the completion of the entire trial within six months. The affidavit, filed by Home Secretary Ajay Bhalla, emphasizes the Centre's earnestness in dealing with the case. Earlier, on July 26, the Manipur government recommended a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) investigation, and on July 27, the Home Ministry also recommended the same.

Political Parties' Stand

The political parties have condemned the violence and called for peace. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has called for an all-party meeting to discuss the situation, while the Congress Party has demanded the resignation of the Manipur Chief Minister.

The Left parties have also condemned the violence and called for a peaceful resolution of the issue. They have urged the government to take steps to ensure the safety of all communities in Manipur.

What Next?

The government has deployed additional security forces in the state to try to bring the violence under control. However, the situation remains tense and there is a risk of further violence.

"The central government, in its pursuit of justice and deterrence against crimes against women, views heinous offences like the present one with utmost seriousness. This is why, with consent from the state government, it has chosen to assign the investigation to an independent agency, namely CBI. By doing so, the government aims to ensure that justice is not only served but also seen to be done, setting a strong deterrent example nationwide. As part of the ongoing efforts to hold the perpetrators accountable, seven individuals have been arrested in the case, with the latest arrest made in Thoubal district on Monday."

It is important that the government takes swift and decisive action to address the root causes of the violence. This includes addressing the concerns of both the Meitei and Kuki communities and ensuring that there is a fair distribution of resources in the state.

Here are some of the statements issued by political parties on the Manipur violence:

  • BJP: "The BJP strongly condemns the violence in Manipur. We demand an all-party meeting to discuss the situation and find a peaceful solution. The safety of all communities in Manipur must be ensured."
  • Congress: "The Congress Party strongly condemns the violence in Manipur. We demand the resignation of the Manipur Chief Minister for his failure to ensure the safety of people. The government must take immediate steps to address the concerns of people and bring the violence to an end."
  • Left Parties: "The Left parties strongly condemn the violence in Manipur. We urge the government to take steps to address the root causes of the violence and ensure a peaceful resolution of the issue."

It is hoped that the political parties can come together to find a peaceful solution to the violence in Manipur. The people of the state deserve to live in peace and harmony.
