That is a popular belief among the people of Ujjain, a city in Madhya Pradesh that is home to the Mahakaleshwar temple, one of the 12 Jyotirlinga of Lord Shiva. The legend says that Mahakal or Lord Shiva is the king of Ujjain and no other ruler (such as a chief minister or a member of the royal family) can stay overnight in the city. If they do, they will lose their power or face misfortune

There are some examples of politicians who have allegedly suffered the consequences of breaking this rule, such as Arjun Singh, Uma Bharti, and Shivraj Singh Chouhan. However, there is no scientific or historical evidence to support this claim. It is possible that this belief originated from the ancient tradition of respecting the deity of a place and not challenging its authority.
