New Delhi, January 5, 2025 - The Indian health authorities have reported minimal cases of Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) within the country. No official outbreak has been declared, but isolated instances have been noted. Recently, an eight-month-old baby in Bengaluru was identified with HMPV, potentially marking the first known case in India linked to a surge in China. This case was confirmed by a private hospital, and although the state health department did not independently verify the test, they trust the facility's procedures.
Additionally, the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) has detected two HMPV cases in Karnataka through routine surveillance. Despite these findings, the National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) indicates no significant increase in respiratory illness data associated with HMPV.
Health officials are keeping a close watch on the situation, especially following reports from China. The Union Health Ministry has reassured the public that there's no need for alarm, stating that HMPV generally causes symptoms similar to the common cold. Hospitals are prepared for an increase in respiratory infections during the winter season. The ICMR is planning to increase the number of labs testing for HMPV as a precaution.
In Delhi, health authorities have issued guidelines to prevent potential outbreaks, directing hospitals to report and manage influenza-like illnesses and severe acute respiratory infections swiftly. This proactive stance aims to ensure that any uptick in cases can be addressed promptly.
