Kolkata, March 7, 2025 – The Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC) has achieved a remarkable milestone by securing the third position among the world’s strongest insurance brands, according to the prestigious Brand Finance Insurance 100 2025 report. With a Brand Strength Index (BSI) score of 88 out of 100, LIC stands tall as a global leader in the insurance sector, reflecting its robust market presence and financial resilience.
The Brand Finance Insurance 100 2025 report, released earlier this week, ranks Poland-based PZU at the top with an impressive BSI score of 94.4, followed by China Life Insurance in second place with a score of 93.5. LIC’s third-place ranking underscores its strong brand equity and customer trust, placing it ahead of many global giants in the insurance industry. In terms of overall brand value, LIC holds the 12th position worldwide, while another Indian insurer, SBI Life, ranks 76th, making them the only two Indian companies featured in the top 100.
The report highlights a 9% growth in brand value across the top 100 insurance brands globally, driven by improved underwriting performance, higher investment income, elevated interest rates, and enhanced profitability. LIC’s success is attributed to its dominant position in India’s insurance market, where it commands a 64.1% share of premiums and a 66.2% share of new business premiums, alongside managing assets worth ₹55 trillion. The company’s extensive network, including nearly 1.5 million agents and over 2,000 branches, further solidifies its reach and influence.
On the financial front, LIC reported a stellar performance for the December 2024 quarter, with a 17% year-on-year increase in standalone net profit, reaching ₹11,056.47 crore, up from ₹9,444.42 crore the previous year. On a consolidated basis, net profit rose by 16% to ₹11,009 crore, compared to ₹9,469 crore in the prior year. This growth was bolstered by a significant 30% reduction in employee compensation and welfare expenses, which dropped to ₹14,416 crore from ₹18,194 crore, leading to an improved expense ratio of 12.97%, down from 15.28%.
India’s insurance sector received an additional boost with Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman announcing in the 2025-26 Budget an increase in the foreign direct investment (FDI) limit from 74% to 100%. This reform is expected to accelerate industry growth, attract global capital, and enhance technological advancements, further strengthening LIC’s position in the evolving market landscape.
Despite its unparalleled size and government backing, LIC has faced challenges, with its stock remaining flat since its listing in October 2022. However, Chairman Siddhartha Mohanty expressed optimism in February 2025, anticipating a recovery in net premium income starting in the fourth quarter, following a regulatory change that impacted premiums earlier in the year.
LIC’s achievement as the world’s third strongest insurance brand reaffirms its legacy, established in 1956 with the goal of expanding life insurance access, particularly in rural India. As the company continues to adapt to competitive pressures and regulatory shifts, its blend of financial security, market dominance, and brand strength positions it as a formidable player on the global stage.
As of today, March 9, 2025, this recognition has sparked widespread pride across India, with social media platforms like X buzzing with posts celebrating LIC’s global standing and its contribution to the nation’s financial security.
