Abu Dhabi: A young man started reciting a poem by calling an emergency number for emergency assistance for Sharjah residents. The man recited the poem by calling the emergency number 993. But this is not the first time such calls have reached the emergency number. Another call came in stating that the goat which had been kept for Eid had escaped from the house.
According to official sources, about 55,873 calls were made to the emergency number by the end of this year. Call center moderator Abdullah Al Buraimi said that some are calling for serious issues but some phone calls are for mere inquiry.
"Call center personnel are treated in a professional manner with the utmost courtesy," he said. A senior official of Sharjah Municipality said 18 per cent of requests for emergency numbers, 67 per cent of inquiries and 15 per cent of emergency messages. He added that the staff of the call center, which operates 24 hours a day, is specially trained to handle query calls.
