The counting of votes began at 8 am, and after initial leads indicating a neck-and-neck fight, Mamata’s TMC maintained a comfortable lead. Postal ballots were counted first. But as the day progressed, the TMC surged past the BJP in the race, leaving its challenger far behind. As of 6 pm, the TMC was nearly at the halfway mark in the 294-seat assembly with 144 wins and was ahead in 215 seats, and the BJP in 70 (40 wins). In the keenly-watched Nandigram seat, suspense reigned supreme after reports of Mamata defeating Suvendu started doing the rounds even as the EC refused to confirm the result. Around 3:30 pm, Adhikari had been leading with merely 6 votes minutes after Banerjee took over briefly with 1,900 votes.
