In India the Prime Minister Narendra Modi is from Other Backward Class(OBC), The recently elected President Draupadi Murmu is a tribal. There are 27 OBC 12 Scheduled Caste and 11 woman ministers in the Modi led ruling government. These numbers are published by ruling BJP party. Other Backward Class is a collective term used by the Government of India to classify castes which are educationally or socially disadvantaged. BJP was not like this always , if you look at the era of Vajpayee and Advani the party was considered an upper caste and upper class party. Is BJP changing its stand today in 2022? The answer is Yes and the primary reason is vote share, if you look at India’s population, more than 40 percent are OBC population. By appeasing OBC voters BJP is trying to balance the caste equation in India’s political situation. The catch, however, is that the BJP was quite successful in mobilising the lower OBC much more than the dominant ones in many states in north India. The regional parties remained more popular amongst the upper OBC compared to the lower ones.
In Maharashtra , as soon as BJP assumed power, they got the report of a dedicated OBC commission on empirical data, submitted it in the court and got the OBC quota restored
