Shelly Oberoi, a first-time councillor from Delhi's East Patel Nagar ward, has been elected as the new mayor of Delhi after the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) won the mayoral election held by the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD). Aaley Md Iqbal has been elected as the deputy mayor. The election was delayed due to political disagreements between the AAP and the BJP, with the Lieutenant Governor finally giving permission to hold the election. The Supreme Court ordered that the MCD members nominated by the Lieutenant Governor could not vote in the election, boosting the chances of the AAP candidate. In addition to the mayor and deputy mayor, six members of the standing committee were also elected. The BJP won two seats on the committee, with AAP taking three, while the sixth seat was contested.
