US and India sign MoU to strengthen semiconductor supply chain and foster innovation partnership



On March 10th, at the India US commercial dialogue 2023, Secretary of Commerce Gina M. Raimondo and Union Commerce & Industry Minister Piyush Goyal signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to strengthen the semiconductor supply chain and foster an innovation partnership. Piyush Goyal highlighted the MoU as a major achievement of the commercial dialogue and stated, "The MoU on semiconductor supply chain and innovation partnership was one of the major outcomes of the commercial dialogue."



On Friday, US Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo and Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal hinted that the US may serve as the testing ground for a domestic 5G connectivity program. Additionally, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar and Raimondo launched a "strategic trade dialogue" to address export controls, explore methods to enhance high-tech commerce, and facilitate technology transfer between the two countries. Notably, Raimondo held an unscheduled meeting with PM Modi to discuss concerns regarding the need to reduce dependence on self-serving actors by diversifying supply chains and limiting the supply of dual-use technologies to adversarial powers, particularly amid Chinese expansionism and Russia's conflict with Ukraine.
