The location of an upcoming manufacturing unit of Foxconn Technology Group has been a topic of contention between the Karnataka and Telangana governments. However, the matter has been resolved with the release of a letter by Foxconn Chairman Young Liu, stating that the company is committed to setting up a manufacturing facility at Kongara Kalan in Telangana. Liu thanked the Telangana Chief Minister for his hospitality and sought his team's support in operationalizing the Kongara Kalan Park as early as possible. The letter has been considered sufficient to clear any doubts about the location of the facility.

The Karnataka government had previously claimed that Foxconn was likely to invest in a manufacturing unit near Bengaluru, with the government even identifying land for the project. The Basavaraj Bommai government had announced the same after a meeting with officials of the company, including Liu. However, days later, Foxconn denied entering into any "definitive agreements," and it was clarified that what had been signed was a letter of intent with investment proposals still under discussion. Foxconn had promised to be in "close contact" with the Karnataka government to ensure the successful grounding of its manufacturing project near Bengaluru.

Opposition parties criticized the Bommai government's announcements as publicity stunts and advised it to tread carefully when it came to investments in Karnataka. The government had recently amended the Factories Act to allow 12-hour working days, seen as a bid to be competitive in the manufacturing sector. However, the uncertainty over Foxconn's investment has raised concerns about the government's approach to attracting investment.

The resolution of the location dispute between the Karnataka and Telangana governments will come as a relief to Foxconn, which has been expanding its operations in India in recent years. The company's investments in the country include a $1 billion facility in Tamil Nadu and plans to invest $5 billion in Maharashtra. With the manufacturing sector gaining importance in India's economic growth, the competition among states to attract investment is likely to intensify.
