The Antikythera mechanism is a 2,000-year-old computer. 115 years ago, divers found a hunk of bronze off a Greek island. It changed our understanding of human history.

Among the wreck’s treasures — beautiful vases and pots, jewelry, a bronze statue of an ancient philosopher — was the most peculiar thing: a series of brass gears and dials mounted in a case the size of a mantel clock. Archeologists dubbed the instrument the Antikythera mechanism. The genius — and mystery — of this piece of ancient Greek technology, arguably the world’s first computer, is why Google is highlighting it today in a Google Doodle.

After Wipro And Cognizant, Tech Mahindra Lays Off 1,000 Employees

Tech Mahindra, India's fifth largest IT and software services firm, has laid off about 1,000 employees this month as part of their annual performance appraisal process, sources told NDTV Profit. The move closely followed similar downsizing by IT majors Wipro and Cognizant, as automation and increased protectionist policies by the US have forced the Indian firms to trim work force. This week Infosys, India's second largest IT company, could also hand out pink slips to hundreds of mid- and senior-level employees as it carries out bi-annual performance review amid a challenging business environment.

Many IT companies are struggling with lower growth amid big changes in the technology landscape which is fast shifting towards new digital services. The tightening of the visa regime in many countries would also impact the IT companies' margin, say analysts.

Last week, the US-based Cognizant had rolled out a voluntary separation programme for directors, associate VPs and senior VPs…

A nephew of UP legislative council chairman and SP leader Ramesh Yadav on Wednesday slapped a sub-inspector in a police station in Etah after he was held for allegedly assaulting hospital staffers who refused to give in to his demand for “VIP treatment”.

Bragging of his political links, Mohit Yadav, who was said to be in an inebriated state, was also caught on camera hurling abuses at the cops, prompting rival BJP to accuse the Samajwadi Party of suffering from “hangover” of power.

“Mohit Yadav is my name...,” said the 24-year-old, before slapping sub-inspector Jitendra Kumar in Etah. He was immediately arrested and charged with assault and obstructing an official from carrying out his duty.

Three separate FIRs have been registered against Mohit Yadav, Etah senior superintendent of police (SSP) Sathyarth Aniruddha said, adding that they will ensure the accused gets stringent punishment.

Iran threatens to cross Pakistan border to hit terrorist safe havens if attacks continue

Iran on Monday warned Pakistan that it would hit terrorist safe havens inside that country if the government does not confront militants who carry out cross-border attacks.

Ten Iranian border guards were killed by militants last month. Iran said Jaish al Adl, a Sunni militant group, had shot the guards with long-range guns, fired from inside Pakistan.

The border area has long been plagued by unrest from both drug smuggling gangs and separatist militants.

Major General Mohammad Baqeri, the Chief of Iranian Armed Forces, said the enemies were trying to make up for their failures through hiring terrorists to target Iran's borders or interests. He said the method was that of "cowardly thieves and bandits" and would only bring the enemies "humiliation and ignominy," Press TV reported.

In 2014 Iran warned it would send troops to Pakistan to retrieve five Iranian border guards kidnapped by Jaish al Adl. Pakistan said at the time that such action would b…

Kapil Mishra 'expose' LIVE: Arvind Kejriwal took 2 crore rupees from Satyendra Jain, says AAP's sacked minister

I could have been sacked before too. I was being praised initially by every AAP leader. There were no talks of me being sacked. Now the timing of the axe raises questions.

I trusted Kejriwal, whom I thought to be clean. There were several funding related issues in Punjab. I though Kejriwal would act on it. I had this trust in him since two years. But two days back, I saw Satyendra Jain giving 2 crore rupees to Arvind Kejriwal at his residence. How did Satyendra Jain get those cash? I asked Kejriwal to offer a apology. But Kejriwal is silent.

Was Kejriwal lying to the public of Delhi since 2015? Within one month of becming minister, I made a report agaisnt Sheila Dixit. When I wanted to meet the anti-corruption bureau, everyone knows what had happened. After writing the letter, I met Kejriwal. I am exposing after I was dismissed by the chief minister.

Arnab Goswami's Republic TV went live today; but why so much fuss over it?

According to the estimates, the company has raised Rs 150-200 crore from a bunch of big and small investors (Goswami retains majority control, according to company sources). A seniornewsbroadcasting person estimates Republic TV’s capital cost at Rs 50-75 crore and operating costs in the first year at Rs 50-60 crore.
Analysts reckon thatRepublic TVhas to hit the top spot in the shortest possible time if it has to make a dent in the ad market and break even. Typically, the top two channels in a genre make money; the number three just about survives. This then raises three questions about Republic TV’s ability to crack the Indiannewsbroadcasting market.
