Movie Review: ‘Sanju’

Cast: Ranbir Kapoor, Anushka Sharma, Sonam Kapoor, Dia Mirza, Vicky Kaushal, Manisha Koirala, Paresh Rawal

Director: Rajkumar Hirani

Rating: 4 Stars out of 5

Sanju is recognizably a Hirani film—you see it in the eccentric touches. Director and co-writer Rajkumar Hirani takes liberties with true events from the life of Sanjay Dutt to add film's emotional appeal, but he does not let Sanju turn into a mere cinematic apologia for a temperamental movie star's many indiscretions.

A roomful of militant goons stand with their fingers in their ears, like kindergartners. A barber explains in a few crisp lines why he’s in jail, and Dutt decides against getting a shave. Sanju is dancing with his dead mother in one scene; in the next, he’s cha-cha-cha-ing in rehab. Also characteristic of Hirani and his long-time co-writer, Abhijat Joshi, is the emotional directness. Dutt might be a complicated guy, but this is a simple film, with a phalanx of violins to alert you whenever it’s time to shed …

The government will soon sell Air India's iconic Mumbai building to Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust

The government will soon sell Air India's iconic Mumbai building to Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust, PTI reports citing people in the know. The objective? Raising funds for the cash-starved national carrier. The proposal has received in-principle approval from the Prime Minister's Office, and an inter-ministerial panel has been set up to work out the modalities. Between 2012-13 and January 2018, Air India received ₹291 crore in lease rentalfrom the 23-storey building. Earlier this month, the government deferred the airline's partial stake sale after it failed to attract any bidders.

India no longer has the world's largest population of the extreme poor

India no longer has the world's largest population of the extreme poor, according to a study by US-based think tank Brookings. That dubious distinction has now gone to Nigeria, which has 87 million people living in extreme poverty compared with India's 73 million. The study shows that as many as 44 Indians are coming out of poverty every minute, and the country's goal of eliminating extreme poverty by 2030 now seems realistic. According to the World Bank, a person living on less than $1.9 a day falls in the extreme poverty category.

Kerala 'sex for silence' case. Why is Kerala Goverment Silent ?

A priest in Kerala committed this sin that amounts to criminal offence under the civil law by using the confession of a married woman to sexually exploit her and to present her to his fellow priests by sharing the details of the confession with them, according to the complaint of the woman's husband.

The man, a member of Malankara Syrian Orthodox Church, one of the most ancient churches, filed the complaint before the Church authorities after his wife narrated her ordeal following discovery of a five-star hotel bill in her email box. The incident came to light after his telephonic conversation with a church official got leaked and found its way to the social media, rocking the two-million strong church with 30 dioceses, including seven in other Indian states and three abroad.

According to the audio clip that has been widely circulated on social media, the woman confessed about her relationship with another priest before her marriage. The complaint said that the series of rape incid…

Two in five Indians won’t have access to drinking water by 2030

Two in five Indians won’t have access to drinking water by 2030. A NITI Aayog report shows 21 Indian cities, including Delhi, Bengaluru, Chennai and Hyderabad, are likely to run out of groundwater in the next two years, directly affecting 100 million people. “Given the combination of rapidly declining groundwater levels and limited policy action, this is also likely to be a significant food security risk for the country,” the report said. BBC recently reported that Bengaluru was among the 12 cities globally likely to run out of drinking water in the near future.

Groundwater in India depleted at 10-25 mm per year between 2002 and 2016. Average rainfall declined, from 1,050 mm in the kharif — summer cropping–season of 1970 to less than 1,000 mm in kharif 2015. Similarly, in the winter cropping, or rabi season, average rainfall declined, from Rs 150 mm in 1970 to about 100 mm in 2015. Dry days — days without rainfall — during the monsoons have increased, from ~40% to 45% in 2015.

Google can predict when you’ll DIE with 95% accuracy using AI

What's more staggering is that trials put the accuracy of the AI's predictions as high as 95%.

It works by chewing up data about patients, like their age, ethnicity and gender.

This information is then joined up with hospital information, like prior diagnoses, current vital signs, and any lab results.

And what makes the system particularly accurate is that it's fed data typically out of reach for machines, like doctors notes buried away on charts or in PDFs.rtificial intelligence systems become smarter over time through a process known as machine learning.

The AI was developed by a team of researchers from Stanford, the University of Chicago, and UC San Francisco.

Google then took the AI system and "taught" it using de-identified data of 216,221 adults from two US medical centres.

This meant the AI had more than 46billion data points to hoover up.

Over time, the AI was able to associate certain words with an outcome (i.e. life, or death), and understand how likely (or u…

First-ever UN human rights report on Kashmir calls for international inquiry into multiple violations

GENEVA (14 June 2018) – There is an urgent need to address past and ongoing human rights violations and abuses and deliver justice for all people in Kashmir, who for seven decades have suffered a conflict that has claimed or ruined numerous lives, a report by the UN Human Rights Office published on Thursday says.

The 49-page report – the first ever issued by the UN on the human rights situation in Indian-Administered and Pakistan-Administered Kashmir – details human rights violations and abuses on both sides of the Line of Control, and highlights a situation of chronic impunity for violations committed by security forces.

“The political dimensions of the dispute between India and Pakistan have long been centre-stage, but this is not a conflict frozen in time. It is a conflict that has robbed millions of their basic human rights, and continues to this day to inflict untold suffering,” said UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Zeid Ra’ad Al Hussein.

“This is why any resolution of the poli…

Uber has applied for a patent to detect drunk passengers.

Uber has applied for a patent to detect drunk passengers. The technology would evaluate behavior using information such as location, data-input accuracy, the angle at which their phone is being held, and the speed at which they’re walking. Riders would then be matched with a driver who has special training — or could be refused a lift entirely. Uber has come under fire over data in the past: The company revealed a massive breach in 2016and last year removed a rider-tracking feature amid widespread criticism.

Google may allow Android users to send text from desktop

We now live in an era where mobile-first is the norm.

So, while using laptops/desktops, one feels the 'incompleteness'. Most of them don't support a SIM card or can't connect with your smartphone to receive/make calls or send texts.

But now, Google is working to bridge this gap. Pretty soon, Androidusers would be able to send texts from desktops/laptops.

Here's how.

First spotted on ChromeOS last year, 'SMS Connect' is Google's new feature that will pair your Android smartphone to your ChromeOS-supported devices to allow you to receive/send text messages.

Notably, a set of codes in the Chromium Gerrit repository mentioning 'CrOS Android Messages integration' have been recently spotted to suggest at an impending pairing of the two worlds - Android and ChromeOS.

Google's idea to pair Android and ChromeOS is pretty similar to Apple's Continuity which connects your device for a seamless experience.

With Continuity, you can receive/make phone calls …

WhatsApp shares “limited data” of its India-centric payments service with parent Facebook.

WhatsApp shares “limited data” of its India-centric payments service with parent Facebook. That’s because Facebook acts as a service provider for WhatsApp Pay, provides customer support and helps keep payments secure, PTI reports, quoting communication from WhatsApp. But Facebook does not use payment information for commercial purposes, WhatsApp says. About 700,000 users have tried out WhatsApp Pay but the official launch has been delayed due to the Centre’s privacy concerns around sharing and storage of data.

Why Microsoft wants to put data centers at the bottom of the ocean

Earlier this week, Microsoft announced the second phase of Project Natick, a research experiment that aims to understand the benefits and challenges of deploying large-scale data centers under water. In this second phase, the team sank a tank the size of a shipping container with numerous server racks off the coast of the Orkney islands and plans to keep it there for a few years to see if this is a viable way of deploying data centers in the future.Microsoft’s cloud strategy has long been about putting its data centers close to major population centers. So with large offshore wind farms potentially providing renewable power and the obvious cooling benefits of being under water (and cooling is a major cost factor for data centers), trying an experiment like this makes sense.
