Azad was taken into custody by the police during the early hours of Saturday. Before the arrest, Azad said in a Tweet that he was willing to surrender if all the people arrested in relation to the protests would be released. According to the Indian Express, Azad had led a "massive" protest at Jama Masjid after Friday prayers without permission.
