March 21, 2006: Bitti Mohanty, son of former Odisha Director General of Police Bidya Bhusan Mohanty, was accused of raping a German national in Alwar, Rajasthan. At the time, Bitti was 25 years old and pursuing a management course in Delhi.
April 12, 2006: A fast-track court in Alwar convicted Bitti and sentenced him to seven years of rigorous imprisonment and a fine of Rs 10,000. The verdict was delivered in a record 21 days.
November 20, 2006: Bitti was granted a two-week parole to visit his ailing mother in Cuttack. However, he jumped parole and went into hiding.
March 2013: After being on the run for nearly seven years, Bitti was arrested in Kerala’s Kannur district. He had been living under a fake identity, Raghav Rajan, and working as a probationary officer in a bank.
March 31, 2017: The Supreme Court granted Bitti bail in connection with the rape case.
October 3, 2023: Bitti was diagnosed with stomach cancer.
June 5, 2024: Following the Rajasthan government’s zero-tolerance policy for crimes against women, Bitti was asked to surrender before the police.
August 12, 2024: Bitti Mohanty passed away at AIIMS Bhubaneswar while undergoing treatment for stomach cancer.
