Bihar Faces Electoral Roll Scrutiny

Bihar’s Electoral Roll Revision Sparks Concerns

In a parallel development, the Election Commission of India (ECI) has flagged suspected foreign nationals during its revision of Bihar’s electoral rolls, raising alarm bells about voter list integrity. The exercise, part of routine updates ahead of state elections, identified discrepancies in voter documentation in several districts, particularly in border areas. While the ECI has not disclosed specific numbers, sources indicate hundreds of names are under scrutiny.

The move has sparked debate, with opposition parties accusing the state government of failing to monitor illegal migration. “This is a serious lapse. How can foreign nationals be on our voter lists?” asked Tejashwi Yadav, Leader of the Opposition in Bihar. The ruling Janata Dal (United) countered, with spokesperson Neeraj Kumar stating, “The ECI’s process is robust. We trust it to ensure a clean electoral roll.”

The ECI has assured that all flagged entries will be verified through field checks and legal processes. “Ensuring the integrity of the electoral roll is paramount. We are following due procedure,” an ECI official said.

In Bihar, the ECI’s findings highlight the need for stringent monitoring of voter lists, especially in sensitive border regions. As elections approach, political parties are likely to intensify rhetoric around migration and citizenship, potentially polarizing the electorate.
