OpenAI is preparing to expand its advertising system to India, with ads expected to launch in the third quarter of 2026. While Indian users currently do not see ads within ChatGPT, some have begun receiving emails notifying them of the upcoming change.

According to the communication, ads will primarily appear on Free and Go plans. Users subscribed to Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, and Education tiers will continue to enjoy an ad-free experience. OpenAI has not yet issued an official confirmation of the India launch, but industry observers anticipate the rollout as part of the company’s broader strategy to support wider access to ChatGPT while safeguarding user privacy.

Privacy and Data Protection

OpenAI emphasized that advertisers will not have access to user chats, chat history, memories, or personal details. Instead, they will only receive aggregated performance metrics such as the number of views or clicks. Ads will be clearly labeled and visually separated from ChatGPT’s organic responses, ensuring transparency for users.

Personalization will be based solely on interactions within ChatGPT, such as ads a user has clicked or contextual cues from conversations. Importantly, this information remains confined to the platform and is not shared externally. Users will also have the ability to manage ad personalization through settings.

Excerpt from OpenAI’s Email to Users

“Ads may appear on Free and Go plans. Plus, Pro, Enterprise, Business and Education plans do not have ads. Ads do not influence the answers ChatGPT gives you. When you see an ad, it is always clearly labeled as an ad and is visually separated from the organic answer. Your personal details and conversations with ChatGPT are private and are not shared with advertisers. Advertisers only receive overall information about how their ads perform, such as total views or clicks.”

Outlook

The introduction of ads in India marks a significant step in OpenAI’s monetization strategy, balancing accessibility with privacy safeguards. By limiting ads to entry-level plans and keeping premium tiers ad-free, the company aims to expand reach while maintaining user trust.
