Vidit Santosh Gujrathi wins Tata Steel Challengers title

India’s third highest ranked chess Grand Master Vidit Santosh Gujrathi, with an ELO rating of 2,718, won the Tata Steel Chess Challengers-2018 tournament at Netherlands with a tally of nine points out of 13 rounds.

Ranked 34th in the world, Gujrathi won the title late on Sunday night and reserved his seat in the Tata Steel Masters tournament to be held in the Netherlands in 2019. The 23-year-old Gujrathi from Maharashtra signed peace treaty with Van Foreest Jorden on the last round to clinch the title.

“Won the @tatasteelchess Challengers 2018! Looking forward to the Masters next year!:),” he tweeted post his win.

In the Masters section in the Netherlands, World Champion GM Magnus Carlsen won the title.

Thousands assemble at Sabarimala for Makaravilakku

Lakhs of pilgrims thronged Sannidhanam ahead of the Makarajyothi and Makaravilakku ceremonies, which will be held after the Thiruvabharanam is adorned on the Lord’s idol during deeparadhana at 6.30 pm on Sunday. The auspicious Makarasamkrama pooja, to mark the changing of the moon from Dhanuraasi to Makararaasi, will be held at the Sreekovil at 1.47 am.

Tantri Mahesh Mohanaru will perform the pooja, including the customary breaking of the “neythenga” (coconut filled with ghee) brought from the Travancore palace and pouring of the ghee on Lord Ayyappa’s idol. After the abhishekam, the ghee will be distributed to devotees as prasadam. The procession carrying the Thiruvabharanam, originating from Pandalam Valiyakoikkal Sree Dharma Sastha temple, will be given a reception at Saramkuthi by a team led by Sabarimala devaswom executive offi…
