Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey decline the invitation : Does the law of the land apply on Twitter ?

Now, #Twitter faces Privilege Notice from India’s Parliament after CEO @Jack declined to appear before parliamentary committee.

Twitter CEO and senior officials of the company have refused to appear before the Parliamentary Committee on Information Technology on February 11, citing “short notice” of the hearing. The meeting was initially scheduled on February 7th but was later postponed to February 11 to allow the Twitter CEO and senior officials more time to make themselves available

The letter sent to Twitter by the Parliamentary IT Committee on February 1 clearly stated that "it may be noted that the Head of the Organisation has to appear before the Committee". It further stated that "He/She may be accompanied by another representative." The Parliamentary IT Committee received a letter on February 7 from Vijaya Gadde, Twitter's global lead for legal, policy, trust and safety, stating, "No one who engages publicly for Twitter India makes enforcement decisions with respect to our rules for content or accounts in India." Deputing a junior employee to represent Twitter at the Indian Parliamentary IT Committee has not gone down well with Indian lawmakers especially since they have no decision making authority, the letter from Gadde said.

This comes at a time when there are growing concerns about safeguarding citizens' data privacy and election interference through social media platforms.

Twitter's conduct is being watched globally and their response is being seen with concern as India's Parliamentary hearing is amongst the fourth in the world after the US Congress, Singapore and EU hearing.
BJP Leader Anurag Thakur posted on twitter saying that The Parliamentary Commitee on Information Technology takes very serious note of this. We will take appropriate action on 11th February. Citizens are welcome to send their concerns/issues via email to the Parliamentary Commitee.

Indian Twitter has to be amongst the most hate-filled and abusive in the world. So what does Govt. of India do? Summons the head of Twitter - not to fix the abuse, but to address Twitter's supposed 'bias' against ruling party ? Does the law of the land apply on Twitter ?

Will #PriyankaGandhi contest from the Rae Bareli seat in 2019 election ?

Congress chief @RahulGandhi appoints his sister #PriyankaGandhi as AICC general secretary for #UttarPradesh East. The headline on #PriyankaGandhi misses the mark if it doesn't underline UP East, where she will run the party campaign- stronghold of PM Modi in varanasi and CM Yogi in Gorakhpur. This is a risky but bold frontal challenge and the Congress making a big statement. As the General Secretary of UP East, will Priyanka Gandhi be able to match the charisma of PM Narendra Modi and CM Yogi Adityanath, she is taking on PM Modi on his turf, Varanasi.

Priyanka Gandhi to sit in this very room where Indira Gandhi used to hold meetings in seventies, senior Congress leaders say. This room is at the recently renovated UP Congress HQ in Lucknow is presently being used by Raj Babbar.

With Sonia Gandhi expected to visit her Lok Sabha constituency Rae Bareli after a span of almost nine months, Congress workers are eager to know whether she will contest from the seat this election, and who will be her replacement if she doesn’t.

Sonia will arrive in Rae Bareli for a two-day visit on Wednesday. Over the past five years, her visits have been limited amid reports of health issues. Even her last trip to Rae Bareli had come after a period of around one and half years. With Sonia Gandhi expected to visit her Lok Sabha constituency Rae Bareli after a span of almost nine months, Congress workers are eager to know whether she will contest from the seat this election, and who will be her replacement if she doesn’t.

Election strategist Prashant Kishor wants JDU party worker to become “eyes and ears” of the government

New JD(U) national vice-president and election strategist Prashant Kishor has said that he will contest neither Lok Sabha elections nor vie for a Rajya Sabha seat, according to party leaders. Holding his first political meeting with about 300 office-bearers of JD(U)’s student and youth wings after getting the senior party post, Kishor is learnt to have said that he is looking at strengthening the party’s organisational base.

According to sources Kishor may introduce 25-30 new faces in 2020 Bihar Assembly polls.
Prashant Kishor was appointed vice-president of the Janata Dal (United) on October 16 by its chief Nitish Kumar. Kishor, an election strategist who founded the Indian Political Action Committee (IPAC), had returned to the fold of the party on September 16. The appointment makes him the second most powerful person in the JD(U), after Nitish himself.

Born in 1977, Kishor is a public health expert. Before making a name for himself in politics, he had spent eight years working at the United Nations. He is credited for helping Narendra Modi-led Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) win an absolute majority in the 2014 general elections. This was Kishor’s second association with the BJP after successfully devising their campaign for the 2012 Gujarat Assembly elections which saw Modi becoming chief minister for the third time.

His work with the BJP during the Gujarat elections of 2012, and during the 2014 general elections had earned him the phrase of being the “most trusted strategist in the Narendra Modi organisation.”

The Oil Prices and the Hypocrisy of the Opposition by Arun Jaitley

The challenges thrown up by the increase in the international price of crude oil cannot be resolved by either the tweets or television bytes of some opposition leaders. The problem is serious. The oil producing nations have capped their production, thus creating a demand-supply mismatch.

The political crisis in Venezuela and Libya has adversely impacted the production in those countries. The US sanctions on Iran have increased the uncertainty towards Iran’s supplies to its buyers. The commercial supply of shale gas, which was intended to balance the high crude oil cost, is running behind schedule.

The high cost of crude oil has also impacted the currency situation. India’s macroeconomic fundamentals with regard to its fiscal deficit, inflation, foreign exchange reserves etc. are fairly stable. Tax collections are encouraging. However, a high cost of crude oil adversely impacts the Current Account Deficit. That, in turn, impacts the currency. Additionally, the hardening of the dollar has further impacted most global currencies. Both the above factors have an impact on the cost of fuel available to a citizen.

The cost of crude increased in the month of April and May. Thereafter, it softened a bit and then increased to its highest level in the past four years. The cost of oil does not move in a straight line. Depending on the global factors, it increases or decreases. A section of the media excessively reports the increase when the prices rise and blackout the reductions when prices fall. Government critics rejoiced the political consequences of the increase of the crude prices. This was evident from their comments. When the price was reduced yesterday, the critics did a volte face and argued that this is bad economics. Let me categorically assure all that there is no going back on deregulation of oil prices. Even Rahul Gandhi, whose party had inflicted a double digit inflation on India during the past five years of UPA-II, gave television bytes and released tweets advocating a price reduction.

The NDA Government has an exemplary record of fiscal prudence. We have maintained the gradual glide path since 2014 to bring down fiscal deficit. We will continue to do so.

No Government can be insensitive towards its people. In the last four Budgets, the Modi Government, to the section of small and middle tax-paying population, has consistently given some direct tax relief each year. The cumulative effect of these income-tax concessions already given is Rs.97,000 crores each year. The reduction of GST rates in the first 13 months itself with regard to 334 commodities has given a Rs.80,000 crore annual relief to the consumer. Last year, in the month of October, when the oil prices were rising, the Centre cut down its excise duty by Rs.2. We have requested the States to make a similar cut. Most of the BJP-NDA States did so. The others refused to do so. I had always maintained that in extraordinary situation, the capacity of an economy to give relief will depend on it’s fiscal strength. In view of the increase, particularly in the direct tax revenue, the Centre decided to give between central excise and the absorptions by the OMCs, a Rs.2.5 relief to the consumer. We requested the States to give a similar relief.

The Centre’s oil tax revenues remain static. The Centre charges a fixed amount. What the Centre gets as tax revenue, 42% of it is passed on to the States. The States independently charge their VAT. The average VAT rate in the country is about 29%. Thus, the States were getting 29% of the lower cost price a few months ago. They now get 29% on the increased price. The States benefit from higher oil prices. The Centre’s collection remains the same. Thus, the capacity of the States to give a Rs.2.5 benefit is within their capacity. Their extra tax collection, because of increase in oil prices, is much larger since their taxes are ad valorem. Yet we have a situation where a number of non-BJP non-NDA States have refused to pass on any benefit to the consumer. What are the people supposed to conclude? Are Rahul Gandhi and his reluctant allies only committed to tweets and television bytes when it comes to give relief to the common man? Depending on the ad valorem rate of VAT in the States and after collecting the VAT and getting 42% of the Centre revenue, 60-70% of the total oil tax goes to the States. Must not the non-BJP States be candid with the people and tell them that both in 2017 and 2018 they refused to give any relief to the people even from their higher revenues. They sent out tweets and gave television bytes but when it came to performance, they looked the other way.

Poll Strategist Prashant Kishor joins Nitish Kumar’s Janata Dal (United)

Poll strategist Prashant Kishor joined Bihar chief minister Nitish Kumar’s Janata Dal (United) in Patna today, months ahead of the 2019 Lok Sabha elections. Kishor was inducted into the party by Kumar, who is also the national president of the JD(U), at the organisation’s state executive meeting.

Kumar welcomed Kishor into the party by presenting him with an angavastram (stole) and he was given a seat next to the chief minister at the state executive meet. It was not immediately known what role he has been assigned to in the party.

During the 2014 elections, Kishor was credited with creating several marketing and campaigning strategies for the BJP which included the ‘chai pe charcha’ campaign, ‘Manthan’ and social media interventions. He founded the Citizens for Accountable Governance (CAG), a non-profit organisation that consisted of around 200 young professions from top colleges and companies in the country. They carried out BJP’s marketing and social media campaign in 2014.

Kishor broke away from the BJP in 2015 and reformulated the CAG as Indian Political Action Committee (I-PAC). He joined Nitish Kumar and strategised the election campaign for his party during the Bihar Assembly elections.

Tamil Nadu Wants Rajiv Gandhi Assassins Released, Will Write To Governor

The Tamil Nadu government will seek the release of the seven persons convicted for the assassination of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi. The recommendation of the state cabinet will be sent to the Governor immediately, said state minister D Jayakumar, adding the "public sentiment" is in favour of the release.

The government's move comes as the Supreme Court asked Governor Banwarilal Purohit to take a call on the mercy petition of one of the convicts, AG Perarivalan. The state reasoned that it would recommend the release of all since they had also petitioned for early release. In March 2016, the Tamil Nadu government had proposed to release the convicts and sought the Centre’s views on the issue. However, last month, the Centre told the Supreme Court that remission of their sentence would set a “dangerous precedent” and have “international ramifications”. On Thursday, a bench of Justices Ranjan Gogoi, Naveen Sinha and KM Joseph disposed of the Centre’s petition opposing the Tamil Nadu government’s proposal for the release of the convicts and asked the Governor to consider the mercy petition of Perarivalan.

If BJP wins 2019 Lok Sabha elections, India will become 'Hindu Pakistan': Shashi Tharoor

Congress leader Shashi Tharoor on Tuesday said that if the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) wins the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, India will become a 'Hindu Pakistan', ANI new agency reported.

"If they (BJP) win a repeat in the Lok Sabha our democratic constitution as we understand it will not survive as they will have all the elements they need to tear apart the constitution of India and write a new one," Tharoor was quoted as saying in an event in Thiruvananthapuram.

Tharoor also said that the saffron party will write a new constitution that will pave the way for a nation much like Pakistan, where rights of minorities are not respected.Tharoor also launched a scathing attack at Prime Minister Narendra Modi by saying that he is more interested in political campaigning than in running the country.

The remark came after Modi, while addressing a farmers' rally in Punjab, alleged that Congress had betrayed the peasantry and used them as a vote bank.

Who will be new Karnataka Chief Minister 2018? Ball now lies in the Governor’s court.

Outgoing Congress Chief Minister Siddaramiah—who had spent over two and a half decades in the Janata Dal and had a bitter parting with the party, had to announce the decision of the Congress to offer unconditional support to the JD(S) leader Kumaraswamy to become Chief Minister! On paper, the Congress, JD(S) and independents enjoy majority. Not to lose out on an opportunity to place the Congress on the defensive, the BJP has gone ahead and staked its claim to form the government on the ground that it is the single largest party in the newly elected Assembly. The ball now lies in the Governor’s court.
The split verdict in Karnataka raises many questions. At the outset, it clearly means that none of the three major players was able to secure majority support across the state. No party was able to establish a pan-Karnataka presence.

In an interesting fact , The micro-blogging platform registered over 30 lakh tweets related to Karnataka assembly polls in the past three weeks, with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) garnering 51 per cent of the share of voice, Twitter announced on Wednesday.

Another interesting fact was that actor turned politican Upendra who stood for election with his own party failed to allure any online voters. He did all his promotions online only.
