LIVE! Foreign Secy Vijay Gokhale's briefing in air strikes begin

Foreign Secretary Vijay Gokhale confirms target was chosen to avoid civilian casualties; JeM camp was run by Maulana Yusuf Azhar, brother-in-law of JeM chief Maulana Masood Azhar.India has confirmed a non-military preemptive strike on a major Jaish-e-Mohammed terror camp in Balakot. Foreign Secretary Vijay Gokhale said the target was chosen to avoid civilian casualties. He said the camp was run by Maulana Yusuf Azhar, brother-in-law of JeM chief Maulana Masood Azhar.

Credible intelligence inputs shows that JeM was planning another Fidayeen attack,The Govt of India took necessary measure to destroy the JeM camps with an air strike, Vijay Gokle Foreign Secretary.

The National Investigation Agency (NIA) conducted raids at the residence of JKLF Chief Yasin Malik in Srinagar on Tuesday morning. Adequate security is deployed outside the residence while NIA officials conducted the raid.

Yasin Malik was detained by the police late on Friday night.

Maliks detention comes ahead of a crucial hearing on Article 35A in Supreme Court which is likely to take place in between Feb 26 to Feb 28.

Vijay Gokhale to take charge as Foreign Secy

Seasoned diplomat Vijay Gokhale will take charge as the next foreign secretary today, succeeding S Jaishankar.

A 1981-batch Indian Foreign Service officer, Gokhale is currently serving as the Secretary in the Ministry of External Affairs.

He was India's Ambassador to China before moving back to the MEA in New Delhi. Gokhale will have a two-year tenure as the Foreign Secretary. He has also served as India's top envoy to Germany and worked in Indian missions in Hong Kong, Hanoi and in New York.

Dr Jaishankar was appointed foreign secretary in January 2015, for two years. He was given a one-year extension in January last year.

Earlier this month, the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi approved the appointment of Gokhale to the post of Foreign Secretary.
