Why to convert a peaceful and routine celebration into a 'caste'-violence after 200 years ?

Gujarat MLA and Dalit leader Jignesh Mevani on Friday denied allegations that he had made provocative speeches on December 31 at the 200th anniversary of the Battle of Bhima Koregaon. Violence broke out in parts of Mumbai, Pune and Aurangabad after a man was killed in clashes in Bhima Koregaon near Pune during the celebrations.

Here is a bite from the speech:-

"If we are to defeat the 'New Peshwas', if we are to take the Bhima Koregaon fight forward, if we are to be inspired by the agitation, we need to be politicians. But the abolition of the caste system will only come about by fighting on the streets," he said, calling for a "revolution".

A day after the speech was delivered, violence broke out in Maharashtra

The question that we need to ask is :why our people are increasingly taking to streets---not who is responsible? The fact is that what happened recently in Maharashtra might not have much to do with caste violence, as Arnab Goswami might like to cry hoarse. It was a ritual celebration of a war that was fought 200 years back between the British and the troops of Baji Rao Peshwa-II. It is mere historic aberration that British had defeated the Peshwas in that battle with the help of Mehars (a Dalit community) that wanted to fight the British but were refused entry by Peshwas on caste grounds allowing British to use the brave Mehar fighters to their advantage. Why did these pseudo nationalists want to convert a peaceful and routine celebration into a 'caste'-violence after 200 years just because the victors were British. This time the loss is that of the Indian nation that belongs as much to the mehars as to the Peshwas.
