“Being Indian is not blood as much as it is culture”- Tony Hillerman.
India, a country of many ethnic groups,a land of throng languages, a veritable babel of tongues and numerous modes of apparel celebrates its 67th republic day with great enthusiasm and fervour. As Delhi turns into fortress with 50,000 security men, preparations for ceremonial parade are in full swing. But the perspective of denizens of India about republic day seems to be altogether different. A national holiday, a day when could get an extra hour of sleep in chilly winter, a time when various e-commerce websites are hosting sales and luring customers, a day to remain glued to television sets to watch parade and feel proud by getting glimpse of various parts of india; humming patriotic songs, remembering freedom fighters, spending quality time with friends and family that’s it. That’s how 26 January each year like a wa…

Getting out of bed in the morning isone of the curses of modern life- and it's not made easier by the temptation of the snooze button. Seemingly in an effort to help raise us from slumber each day, +Microsofthas unveiled a new alarm app that forces you to prove you're awake before it stops. So, for example, it might ask you to snap a selfie or play a particular game before it finally shuts up. The app, called Mimicker Alarm, may ask you to take a picture of something green - or repeat a tongue twister over and over. If you don't complete the task, the alarm starts up again.

Amitabh Bachchan, Priyanka Chopra replace Aamir Khan as 'Incredible India' brand ambassadors

After about a month of speculation, actors Amitabh Bachchan and Priyanka Chopra have been chosen as the brand ambassadors for the government's 'Incredible India' campaign.

The selection of the two actors follows the Centre's decision to discontinue the contract of actor Aamir Khan, who had angered the BJP-led government with his remarks on perceived intolerance in the country.

Khan had promoted Indian tourism for a decade as the brand ambassador.

A number of multi-disciplinary icons, including famous sports personalities, were shortlisted by the tourism ministry to be the face of the 'Incredible India' campaign.

Other suggestions being considered include choosing a female personality as the mascot for the 'Atithi Devo Bhava' series which is part of the 'Incredible India' campaign to attract foreign tourists.

Bacha Khan University attack: 20 killed; Pakistani Taliban spokesman denies hand behind attack

At least 25 people were killed and 50 others injured today after heavily armed militants stormed the Bacha Khan University in Pakistan. The gunmen entered the university in Charsadda, some 50 kilometers from the city of Peshawar, and opened indiscriminate fire on students and teachers. According to reports, Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) claimed responsibility for the attack. However, their spokesperson Muhammad Khorasani later denied their involvement.
The investigations into the terror attack are underway, but we must not avert our eyes from the fact that the attack was the result of yet another intelligence failure and a major security lapse, especially when only three days ago, rumors of security threats to educational institutions triggered the closure of schools in the same region. In many ways, today's attack was reminiscent of the gruesome December 2014 terrorist attack on the Army Public School in Peshawar which left over 140 dead - most of them children. The message b…

Tsai Ing-wen of Taiwan's main opposition party will become the island's first female president in a landslide victory over the ruling Kuomintang Saturday, as voters turned their backs on closer China ties.

KMT candidate Eric Chu conceded defeat in a disastrous rout for the party, addressing tearful crowds at the party's headquarters in Taipei.
The vote count is continuing but live television figures from polling stations show Tsai of the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) has secured a historic landslide victory, with around 60 percent against 30 percent for Chu.

Security reduced for Aamir, SRK, removed for others

The Mumbai Police have reduced security for a number of Bollywood personalities, including Aamir Khan and Shah Rukh Khan. The decision was taken as they felt that such high degree of security was "unwanted" for these celebrities, as reported by Indian Express.

Aamir and Shah Rukh were provided additional security during the end of 2015 after their remarks on 'intolerance' drew extreme and unprecedented reactions from political parties and various outfits. SRK has been a target ever since his film 'My Name Is Khan' ran into trouble in 2010 and later, when terrorist Hafiz Saeed offered accommodation to the actor in 2013. Aamir was provided extra cover in 2013, for the outrage against his film 'PK', and more so, after his 'intolerance' remarks in November last year.

There are some Bollywood personalities whose security cover has been completely removed. These include Vidhu Vinod Chopra, Rajkumar Hirani, Farah Khan and producers Ali and Karim Mo…

2016 will be the year of innovation in India, for India

2015 was a crazily fast-paced year in India’s tech startup world. From an entrepreneur or potential entrepreneur’s perspective, it was like the gold rush – it was easy to raise funds (and large sums at that) very quickly as long as you were tackling a problem or space that was “hot” according to the larger venture capital firms (both Indian and global). If you ever had had any entrepreneurial ambitions (or had boasted about your jugaadu-ness to your friends in college), 2015 was your time. You had to start up and raise money, preferably lots of it. And in the process become a startup celebrity.

For investors, 2015 was when it seemed like the Indian Internet ecosystem had finally come of age. Much like everything else in India, we tend to really believe in ourselves only after the world starts to believe in us. Whether it is an Indian Nobel Prize winner or an Indian sportsman, it’s only after the world starts to send accolades their way that we recognise their worth. Th…
